It is unsurprising that generational discourses have flourished in contemporary Korea, since successive generations formed through the processes of industrialization, democratization, digitalization, and individualization have developed divergent value orientations, giving rise to generational conflicts with profound social implications. Among these, the cohort who attended college during the 1980s has often been regarded as having forged a distinct and homogeneous identity through their collective struggle for democratic transformation. This perspective emphasizes the political dimension of those who participated directly or indirectly in the democratization movement. However, increasing observations suggest that this population, including political activists, is broader and more complex than the traditional assumption of homogeneity. To address this issue, the present study examines the self-perceptions of the 1980s college generation in Korea, employing latent class analysis to identify distinct typologies of generational self-image. The analysis reveals three primary types: Active Transformers, Passive Observers, and Dual Colliders. These classifications illuminate both the shared identity and the internal diversity that characterize this generation. Overall, the findings underscore the necessity of multi-dimensional empirical approaches to understanding the complex and evolving identity of Korea’s 1980s college generation, moving beyond simplistic notions of uniformity to capture their differentiated experiences and perspectives.
